7 Questions to Ask Before You Choose a Solar Installer

The solar industry has a reputation problem, and it’s well earned. Plenty of companies sell cheap systems, install them quickly, and vanish before the warranty matters. Here are seven questions that separate the keepers from the cowboys.

1. Are you Clean Energy Council accredited?

This is non-negotiable. CEC accreditation is what makes your system eligible for the federal rebate and signals the installer meets industry standards. Ask for it, and check it. (We’re happy to show ours.)

2. Who actually does the install?

Some companies subcontract to whoever’s cheapest that week. Ask whether you’ll get the company’s own accredited team — consistency in who’s on your roof matters for quality.

3. What panels and inverter will you use — exactly?

Vague quotes (“premium panels”) are a red flag. You want specific makes and models so you can compare apples to apples. Tier-1 panels and a reputable inverter brand are worth paying a little more for.

4. Is the quote fixed, with the rebate already deducted?

A good quote is itemised and fixed, with the STC rebate shown as an upfront discount. Watch for “from” pricing and quotes that balloon once they’re on site.

5. What warranties apply — and who honours them?

Panels, inverter and workmanship all have separate warranties. The key question: who fixes it if something goes wrong? A local installer handles claims in person. An interstate or overseas seller may leave you on hold.

6. Are you local, and will you be here in five years?

This is the big one on the Mid Coast. Warranties are only as good as the company behind them. A genuinely local installer has a reputation to protect and is a short drive away when you need service.

7. Can I see local reviews and recent jobs?

Ask for reviews from your area and examples of nearby installs. Real, local, recent feedback tells you far more than a glossy brochure.

The takeaway

The cheapest quote almost never wins once you account for hardware quality, install standards and whether anyone answers the phone in a few years. Ask these seven questions and you’ll quickly see who’s built to last.
